Debate to determine survival of the fittest

Darwin residents can mark the 208th birthday of naturalist Charles Darwin by attending a public debate and morning tea at Charles Darwin University’s Casuarina campus.

A crocodile expert will join local media identities and researchers in the debate, “It’s time to rethink the theory of evolution”, during the Darwin Day at CDU event on Friday, 10 February.

The event’s MC, former Northern Territory Administrator Tom Pauling AO QC, said Darwin’s theory of evolution continued to inspire rigorous debate more than a century after it was first penned.

“Heated debate followed Darwin throughout his career, particularly following the publication of his famous book, On the Origins of Species, in 1859,” Mr Pauling said.

“The CDU debate will be a fun and novel way to commemorate the life of a man whose theories turned our understanding of our own existence on its head and continue to do so.”

Debaters include Vice-Chancellor Professor Simon Maddocks, researcher, and Territory FM radio presenter Mel Little.

Darwin Day at CDU will be held at the Mal Nairn Auditorium at Casuarina campus on Friday, 10 February from 10am until 10.45am.
