Chainsaw course cuts to the chase

Darwinites wishing to sharpen their skills with a chainsaw will have the perfect opportunity over the next couple of weekends, thanks to a training course at Charles Darwin University’s Casuarina campus starting this Saturday (31 March).

Horticulture lecturer Robyn Wing said she’d become aware that many people had experienced “chainsaw problems” as they attempted to clear fallen trees and shrubs in the wake of Cyclone Marcus.

“This has prompted CDU Horticulture to put out a call for expressions of interest in chainsaw training,” Ms Wing said.

“It will be a two-day basic training course designed to build user confidence in safely operating small or medium chainsaws.

“We plan to start the course this Saturday, and if demand is sufficient we’ll run it again from 7 April.”

Ms Wing said participants would learn how to operate a chainsaw safely, how to cross cut felled trees, about compression and tension cuts, and how to look after the saw.

“Beginners will be welcome and you can bring your own chainsaw if you wish,” Ms Wing said.

The course cost is $180 per person. To register interest, send an email to horticulture@cdu.edu.au by 5pm tomorrow (Wed 28 Mar).
