Charles Darwin University is continuing to climb the list of the world’s best universities that are less than 50 years old.

The Northern Territory’s only university has been listed in joint 31st position in The Times Higher Education (THE) “150 Under 50 Rankings 2016”, which identifies the top 150 universities around the world that are aged less than 50 years old.

CDU has featured on the Times Higher Education “100 Under 50” for four consecutive years previously, rising steadily to its highest ranking last year of 48th. This is the first year the pool of universities has widened to name the best 150.

CDU Vice-Chancellor Professor Simon Maddocks said he was proud of CDU’s staff in achieving joint 31st place.

“Not only has CDU risen for the fifth consecutive year, but this year we also have risen 17 points in a larger pool of universities,” Professor Maddocks said.

He said the outstanding ranking reflected, in particular, the quality and excellence of research programs at the university.

“The challenge for CDU as a small regional university is to maintain its ranking in the fiercely competitive international system,” he said.

CDU was one of 19 Australian universities to feature on the list this year, placing third behind University of Technology Sydney (21) and Queensland University of Technology (28).

The “THE 150 Under 50” rankings complement the annual “THE World University Rankings”, in which CDU is ranked in the top two percent of universities worldwide.

Performance indicators for both rankings include research teaching (the learning environment), research (volume, income and reputation), citations (research influence), international outlook (staff, students and research) and industry income (innovation).
