CDU expands Indigenous studies courses

Charles Darwin University will extend its range of higher education courses in Indigenous studies with four new offerings next year.

The Head of the School of Indigenous Knowledges and Public Policy, Dr Curtis Roman, said the courses would expand social, human and economic opportunities for Indigenous people across Australia.

“These courses include two at diploma level and two at graduate certificate level, but all four will equip graduates with expert skills and knowledge to either work more effectively with Indigenous people or to be more productive in Indigenous research,” Dr Roman said.

The new courses will be open to both non-Indigenous and Indigenous students.

They are:

       Diploma of Indigenous Employment, a short course for people wanting to work in human resource management or to improve the career prospects for those who already do.

      Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Engagement (for people already working with Indigenous people) emphasizes productive and respectful ways to work with Indigenous people.

       Diploma of Indigenous Research, designed only for students who identify as Indigenous, to develop knowledge and skills in Western research processes. Indigenous people working as health workers, education workers, liaison officers, field officers, and in conservation and land management roles are ideal for this course and it will allow them to transition into the research area.

       Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Research Methodologies introduces students to issues in Indigenous research, to prepare for work in research in the NT or with Indigenous people.

“We are determined to continue playing a key role in Indigenous success and to be globally recognised for respecting Indigenous knowledge systems,” Dr Roman said.

From 2018 the School of Indigenous Knowledges and Public Policy will offer 18 courses in its undergraduate, postgraduate and research programs.
