Art season is in the air at CDU

It’s art season at Charles Darwin University with students displaying their works across five different exhibitions around Darwin.

Works by emerging artists enrolled in CDU Higher Education or Vocational and Education Training Visual Arts courses will be showcased in exhibitions as early as Friday this week.

Visual Arts lecturer Amy Jackett said works included ceramics from Alice Springs, and paintings, bright-coloured screen printed fabrics, instillations and woodwork sculptures from Darwin.

“The exhibitions will showcase some excellent work,” Dr Jackett said.

“They’re the next generation coming through and have a lot to give. It’s exciting to see what these emerging artists come up with.”

She said Honours students Ian Hance and Serge Ah Wong would publicly display pieces, which they had worked on for the past year, for the first time in solo exhibitions.

“For a lot of people, art is quite a personal outlet,” she said.” It’s a great way for people to explore their personal identity.”

Visual Arts student Joel Mitchell said he was excited to feature his woodwork sculptures as part of the Radar exhibition.

“It’s a great opportunity to take the next step as an artist by exhibiting and allowing more people to see your work,” he said.

Joel said his lecturer had supported him in his work by encouraging him to pursue his passions.
