Academic year set to start in Alice

Charles Darwin University has welcomed two new teaching staff to Alice Springs as the campus prepares for the start of the higher education academic year next week.

Director Central Australia Lyle Mellors warmly welcomed Midwifery lecturer Dr Angela Bromley and Beauty Therapy lecturer Debra Street to what has shaped up as another busy year at the Red Centre campus.

“We will kick off the higher education year with a student orientation evening in our campus library tomorrow at 4.45pm,” he said.

“This will allow lecturers and students to meet each other informally, and provides an opportunity for students to learn about the services we provide online and on the campus.”

Mr Mellors said vocational training in the Trades, Community and Children’s Services, Literacy, Tourism, Business and Horticulture sections already was well under way and that Creative Arts classes would start today. 

“We’ve begun delivering training to Vocational Secondary School continuers in Music, Screen Media and Cookery, and look forward to welcoming a new group of students next month.

“Our Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy and Nail Technology classes have begun and our remote Business lecturers are in the field, delivering training in communities as far afield as Ti Tree and Yuendumu.

Mr Mellors said staff were looking forward to several key events throughout the year. These include the Knowledge Intersections Symposium in May, the formal Graduation Ceremony in June, and the Prize Giving Celebration in November. 

“We will also host the 2018 Charles Darwin Scholar, Professor Daniel Dennett, who is scheduled to deliver the Charles Darwin Oration at Alice Springs campus on 20 September,” Mr Mellors said.
