From Vietnam to Darwin to an electrical engineering career

Alumni - Trong

Trong studied a Bachelor of Engineering with honours at CDU, majoring in electrical engineering. He now works as an electrical engineer at APD Engineering and has never looked back.

Since living and studying in Darwin, Trong has made many friends and professional connections. During his final year of study, this really paid off.

“I started volunteering with Engineers Australia,” says Trong. “During one of the events I met my career mentor. This has been so useful that I still have that mentorship, two and a half years later.’

Trong believes that CDU’s networking opportunities for students are excellent.

“The university provides plenty of options when it comes to looking for a job and getting to know more people in the industry,” he says.

“It was really great for me to get in touch with the main government body of engineering in Australia.”

Supporting other students

For the past three years, Trong has been part of the young engineer Australia Northern Committee Board. He’s keen to give others the same career opportunities that he’s had.

“As the Vice Chair I’m working alongside the chair to come up with events and networking sessions targeted towards graduates and final year students,” says Trong.

“What we’re trying to do is create a good platform for them to communicate with young engineers who’ve recently entered the workforce, as well as create opportunities for them to find a mentor, similar to how I got my mentor back in the day.”

Embracing the great outdoors

Trong loves spending time with his friends on the weekend, and when it comes to activities, he’s spoilt for choice.

“I guess you wouldn’t be a true Territorian if you’re not doing outdoor activities,’ he says.

“I like playing tennis and heading to the local markets after if I’m hungry.

People love sports and activities here, so it’s a perfect playground and another great opportunity to start making connections before you enter the workforce.”
