Victor always wanted to travel overseas, so the chance to study his Masters of Information Technology in Darwin was a dream come true. But Victor isn’t the only one who has benefitted from this move. Taking this opportunity for himself, he’s given back to others.

Somewhere to call home

Victor was initially attracted to Darwin because of the appealing climate and lifestyle.

With incredible civic amenities, recreation options and pleasant weather conditions, Darwin continued to impress me to the point that I chose to take advantage of it by securing admission at CDU,” says Victor.

I was really confident that Darwin would provide me with excellent options to study and perform well.

Buddy program

Victor commenced his studies online during COVID-19 and was one of the first senior buddies in the very first CDU buddy programs. In this role he provided mentoring and support to new international students.

“When I was doing my first semester (online from home), CDU assisted me a lot and provided great academic guidance,” says Victor. “Later, the buddy program was introduced to students and was a huge success.”

Victor’s favourite part of the buddy program was meeting like-minded people, creating networks, conducting events and playing games virtually.

The senior buddy responsibility is a privilege that has moulded me into a bright student and strengthened my leadership skills, says Victor.

A taste for volunteering

Victor’s experience as a senior buddy gave him a taste for helping others. He’s since volunteered for numerous organisations.

I recently volunteered for Kindness Shake to help facilitate an event called Kindness festival for the international students,” he says. "I’m also part of the Good Games club which conducts games and volunteering events to bring people together to make new friends in a fun and healthy environment.

The perfect combination

When he graduates, Victor hopes to work as a Software Developer for a multinational corporation. But his volunteering work will never be far away.

Obtaining an international degree with international exposure would provide a plethora of career prospects.

"Parallelly I would like to volunteer for other social organisations as well,” he says.
