Sushan, from Nepal, is one of the first in his family to receive a university education. He grew up dreaming of making a difference to the people in his community and wanted to study a Master of Business Administration in Australia.

After completing his undergraduate degree, Sushan researched universities and CDU made the top of his list.

At the risk of sounding cliché, the slogan ‘You Make CDU’ gave me the vibe of a welcoming community that treats all students equally, regardless of nationality, he says. Also, CDU’s ranking as #2 university in Australia for postgraduate employment outcomes is something that caught my attention.

The best sunset in the world

Sushan recalls his excitement when he first arrived in Darwin.

The sun was on the horizon, about to set, when my flight landed in Darwin and the hues of sunset were reflecting on the ocean. From the airplane’s window, Darwin looked like a beautiful coastal city blessed with best sunset view in the world.

Sushan has been in Darwin for six months. He enjoys the relaxed lifestyle where he can easily get involved in the welcoming community.

He spends his free time with friends at the world-famous Mindil Markets, cycling along the Nightcliff and Casuarina beachfront, and going for walks around the city and the nearby coastal areas.

New connections

Darwin is a great place to find work, make public relations, engage with locals, and enjoy a relaxed lifestyle while studying, Sushan says.

Sushan has been elected as the President of the CDU Virtual Student Club, a student group organising various virtual events for students’ engagement and growth. He is also an executive member of the CDU Student Council.

"These events and initiatives have helped me gain confidence, leadership and communication skills, and above all some great friends for life," he says.

Sushan credits the engaging nature of CDU staff.

"The lecturers try to bring creativity out of students and staff are very welcoming. CDU is dedicated to engaging and nurturing international students in every way possible," he says.

Success in Darwin

CDU’s welcoming community ensures international students get opportunities to network and adapt well to life in Australia. Sushan has been active in the community at CDU and in Darwin.

"I am one of the Study in Northern Territory Ambassadors for 2022. I am also a Resident Leader in International House Darwin (IHD), an amazing on-campus student accommodation. In short span of time, I have made amazing friends and beautiful memories that I will cherish for life, which is possible because I am living in IHD,” he says.

To succeed, Sushan recommends embracing all opportunities offered to students.

Growth of a student depends on the opportunities he or she is exposed to. CDU has offered me countless such opportunities which have helped me be a better and more competent human being. This is the reason why I encourage my friends back home to try and explore this amazing community called CDU. My advice to a new student would be to get involved in student communities and be active as much as they can. The more you get involved, the more opportunities will come your way, he says.
