Growing up in a family that ran a real estate business in Japan, Ayumi watched her mother interact with financial consultants and accountants. Fascinated by her mother’s knowledge, Ayumi decided she wanted to pursue becoming a financial professional.

Why Darwin?

Ayumi was attracted to study her Master of Professional Accounting in Darwin for several reasons. The warm climate was just one of them.

“When I was a kid, I used to travel to tropical climates during vacations and had grown to love the warm weather,” she says. “I searched online and found out that the dry season in Darwin offers some of the best weather and I wanted to experience the tropical climate while studying.”

Ayumi was also keen to study in a connected environment. CDU was ideal

“I wanted to study in a university with small classrooms so that I could ask questions easily to the lecturers, and make closer connection to my cohorts,” she says.

“I got offers from several other universities, but CDU’s inclusive environment and the slogan “You Make CDU” got me interested in being part of CDU.”

A sustainability focus

With her interest in sustainability for the future, Ayumi was keen to boost her knowledge of sustainable finance. CDU has let her do this.

“CDU allows me to enhance the knowledge of sustainable finance as they let students choose sustainability selective units in the Master of Professional Accounting,” she says.

“This was attractive to me since I believe there will be global need for financial professionals who possess sustainable finance and sustainability reporting knowledge in the coming future.”

Love where you live

Ayumi is proud to call Darwin home. Surrounded by so many wonderful things, it’s not hard to see why

“The local markets are an excellent opportunity to try out different cuisine from various cultures as Darwin has a vast multicultural community with its international student population,” says Ayumi.

The beach is another place that Ayumi holds close to her heart.

“Walking across the beach in Darwin while watching the sunset is one of the best experiences in my life,” she says. “I really enjoy the fantastic view and Darwin has some of the best sunsets in the world.”

Thanks to the locals, Ayumi has settled into Darwin life quickly.

“The people in Darwin are the friendliest and most welcoming people you want to meet in life” she says.

“Since Darwin is a small city compared to other big cities in Australia, it’s relatively easy to get to know people and become close to them. I’ve travelled so many places and have been to eight countries, but the people in Darwin are the best.”

Advice for other Japanese students

CDU has provided many opportunities for Ayumi to build on her skills and has provided ongoing support to help her prepare for the corporate world.

She has positive advice for other Japanese students.

“CDU allows you to connect to mentors who help with your studies, so you never lose your confidence,” she says.

“I’ve been able to brush up on my professional skills and connect with professionals through various programs, including AWEsome Program, Mentoring program, and Junior and Senior buddy program.”

A time of growth

Ayumi credits CDU’s strong network for making her study experience so enjoyable.

“Even though you may not have studied or worked in your study area yet, students can enjoy their studies and grow their skills because of the great lecturers, students, and staff,” says Ayumi.

“CDU offered me great cohorts, teachers and other students from various countries who helped me through studies, life, and work. They listened to me and shared their concerns and stories too.”

Improved English

Speaking with other students in English helped Ayumi improve her English Skills

“For those who genuinely want to improve their English skills while studying, I sincerely recommend choosing CDU for your study location,” she says. “It helped me grow and learn English and understand various cultures since you’ll be surrounded by so many international students.”

Career advice

Ayumi loves the supportive learning environment at CDU, and the career advice on hand.

“When I have any concerns about my career, I always go to CDU’s career centre and they help me with my CV and internship opportunities,” says Ayumi.

“It can be tough for international students trying to work in Australia for the first time. However, CDU will offer students opportunities to work in CDU or an Australian company through the AWEsome program, which is very helpful.”

Getting involved

CDU provides great events for students with its welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. There are also plenty of opportunities to volunteer.

“I’m currently volunteering as the Japanese committee member and as a treasurer for the Australian Japanese Association NT,” says Ayumi.

“I’m also volunteering as a Senior Buddy for the new students, which has been one of my greatest experiences ever in Darwin because I can connect with new students and share my experience to help them.”
