Showkat Ara Khan – Learning for tomorrow
With an academic background and experience in statistics, Showkat knew that a Master of Data Science would be a great way to grow her career. Living in Darwin has been a bonus.
“When I moved to Darwin, I immediately felt at home,” says Showkat. “The weather and environment match my home country, and there’s a strong Bangladeshi community. You can maintain your community here because the people of this area are always respectful of different cultures.”
Keeping busy
Darwin is a vibrant city, which means that Showkat and her family are never bored.
“Multiple events occur here almost every day, and there are lots of opportunities to do different activities,” she says. “It’s a wonderful place for families because it’s peaceful and safe with many playgrounds and parks.”
“One of the things I love most about Darwin is the fishing,” says Showkat. “The ocean is all yours, and you can catch your own seafood lunch and dinner. It’s great fun.”
Helping others
When she first moved to Darwin, Showkat faced some accommodation and financial challenges. Since overcoming these, she’s using her experience to help others.
“I’m creating a new Student Club to support international families joining CDU,” says Showkat. The purpose of the group is to offer support and advice to families new to Australia and Darwin. “
Experience
Since arriving at CDU, Showkat has gained valuable experience in STEM.
“After starting the on-campus study, I got involved with CDU’s IT Code Fair as an ambassador and cooperated at the mock IT Code Fair program,” says Showkat.
“I did some voluntary work with Inspired NT as a member of STEM for Women and attended the STEM for Women Mentorship Program, where I got valuable suggestions from my selected mentor.”
So, what does the future look like for Showkat?
“I’d like to find a job here when I finish my study, but I’m also keen to learn about the working area of social welfare.
