Nishat is pursuing a career in medical science
Growing up in the heart of Bangladesh, Dhaka, Nishat fell in love with books, arts and learning new things. Her parents shared a passion for working in the field of healthcare, so Nishat was determined to work towards a career in medicine.
Deciding on Darwin
Nishat knew that she wanted to undertake her studies somewhere that felt like home. After researching university options, she decided on CDU.
Her partner was already studying at CDU and he told her how much he enjoyed studying at the Casuarina campus and living in Darwin.
“He used to tell stories about his life here and what a great education I could receive here,” she says.
Now I love how multicultural CDU is. Whenever you are in a class you can see students from almost every corner of the world.
Studying science at CDU
Nishat received a Global Excellence Scholarship from CDU. She says the scholarship has been an incredibly positive opportunity as it has helped her through her study journey.
She feels CDU has great mentors who are always there to help you through your degree.
“I love how helpful, and considerate lecturers are," she says. "All of them are an inspiration on their own.”
Nishat is extremely passionate about the science field and believes every little contribution will help the world and the challenges we face.
Biomedical science, at the heart of it, is not just about curing diseases. It is also about finding and preventing the ones that are taking place in today’s challenging world.
Extracurricular activities
Nishat’s love for learning doesn’t just stop at science. She enjoys taking part in extracurricular activities and exploring opportunities to get involved in.
In her first year, her partner (an IT student at CDU) introduced her to the idea of the NT Bus Tracker app. The app would provide real-time information about public buses in Darwin and Alice Springs. Together, they decided to develop it.
“Even though I was from a different background, I helped him however I could,” she says. “We ended up being the First Runner Up at IT Code Fair which is still a very memorable day for me.”
What's next?
After graduating, Nishat wants to establish her dream career as a Medical Laboratory Scientist. Her vision is to contribute towards the discovery of novel treatments.
“Moving into a research career will enable me to be involved in cutting-edge medical research that is being undertaken throughout the country and contribute to the discovery of novel treatments,” she says.
My advice for anyone who is considering studying a science degree at CDU is if you are thinking about it, just do it.
