Arriving in Australia from Ho Chi Minh City, Jolin was passionate about furthering her career and expanding on her existing skills. Since studying Master of Professional Accounting at CDU she hasn’t looked back.

“When I was studying for my MBA, I became interested in learning more about finance as I realised how important it is in an organisation and how it links to all other decisions made,” says Jolin.

Darwin’s warm climate and people

When Jolin applied to study at CDU she knew very little about Darwin. She’s since fallen in love.

“I didn’t know there was a tropical place in Australia with similar weather to my hometown, Ho Chi Minh City,” says Jolin. “If I’d known about Darwin before moving to Australia, I would have come here straight away.”

The warm weather makes me feel energetic and happy. I love being close to nature, with waterfalls, beaches, sunshine, animals, tropical fruits and I love the close connection with the people here. They’re much more laid back than in the big cities.

Charles Darwin University is smaller compared to other universities, but Jolin says that’s what makes it so special.

“The services are outstanding, and the staff are super friendly, helpful, and attentive in both Waterfront and Casuarina campuses,” she says.

A stepping stone to success

An internship during her study paved the way for Jolin’s career.

“I received an opportunity to take the internship at the Chamber of Commerce Northern Territory,” she says. “During the internship, I was supporting different divisions including accounting, marketing and business council.”

Jolin’s hard work, passion and dedication paid off.

I received an employment offer after finishing my internship and now work as a support officer for the Local Jobs Program, managed by Australian Government, Department of Employment and Work Relations.

Jolin assists local jobseekers find suitable employment or training opportunities and engages with different stakeholders, including local businesses, Government, employment services providers and registered training organisations.

“I really love this job, as I can use my previous work experience and the accounting and finance knowledge earned from CDU’s course,” says Jolin.

I love that I’m helping people, especially Indigenous, female and other disadvantaged people to get jobs and have a better life.
