
Get paid to gain hands-on experience with Outback Active.
The Faculty of Health is offering Placement Subsidies to eligible Exercise and Sport Science students allocated a placement with the Outback Active program.
You can travel to the NT for an immersive experience with the Outback Active Immersive NT Experience Subsidy, or complete your placement remotely with the Outback Active Placement Subsidy.
The subsidy is a payment made directly to eligible students to provide financial support when attending the placement.
About the placement
The Outback Active practicum is a 4–5 week exercise and sport science placement designed to help students build professional skills in a supportive, multi-disciplinary environment while gaining experience in digital health.
You will work under the supervision of CDU lecturers or an external exercise physiologist to develop and implement tailored exercise programs for people 65+ years, and First Nations people 50+ years living in the Katherine region, who want to stay strong, healthy and mobile.
Outback Active is supported by funding from Northern Territory Primary Health Network through the Australian Government’s PHN Program
What you will gain
- Digital health experience: Experience in remote client engagement, virtual assessments, and implementing exercise guidance online
- Close supervision: Shadow an experienced Exercise Physiologist during assessments, and regular case conferencing with supervisors.
- Multi-disciplinary team: Work in the same space with an exercise scientist, exercise physiologist and occupational therapy students (for Darwin-based placements, semester 1, 2025)
- Community impact: Outback Active fills a service gap in Katherine, NT, where there are limited allied health services. Completed clients report improved physical health and wellbeing.
Important dates
- Application closing date: 30 April 2025
- Onboarding date: 29 May 2025, Casuarina campus or online
- Placement start date: 2 June 2025, Casuarina campus or online.

Subsidies eligibility
To be eligible for the subsidies, you must be a CDU student meeting the following criteria:
Financial subsidy option 1 - Immersive NT experience
- Subsidy: $2,500
- Course: Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science (WESS02/WESS01)
- Unit: Currently completing placements for SPE 315 or SPE 405
- Additional Criteria: Must be committed to a placement with Outback Active, and must travel to the NT for one week of the placement.
- Payment:$1,500 will be paid one week before placement, and $1,000 upon placement completion
Financial subsidy option 2 - Placement subsidy (no travelling required)
- Subsidy: $319.50 per week, for a maximum of 5 weeks
- Course: Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science (WESS02/WESS01)
- Unit: Currently completing placements for SPE 315 or SPE 405
- Additional Criteria: Must be comitted to a remote placement with Outback Active.
- Payment: A one-off full payment will be made upon placement completion.
