The Vice-Chancellor invites you to join Associate Vice-Chancellor Dr Penny Sweeting and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research & Executive Sponsor Men@CDU, Professor Steve Rogers, in conversation with Olympic Swimmer and Human Rights Advocate Daniel Kowalski.
Daniel Kowalski is a two-time Olympian, a leading sports administrator and a powerful human rights advocate. During an impressive career, he has overcome significant challenges. These include undergoing career-threatening surgery four times, beating crippling depression and anxiety, and coming out publicly.
After narrowly missing the 1992 Olympics as a 16-year-old, Daniel finally earned a place on the Australian swim Team in 1993. At just 19, he finished second in the 1500m freestyle at the 1994 World Championships in Rome and became the fifth man under the magical 15-minute barrier. Although he qualified for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and walked away with more medals than any other Australian athlete – an individual silver and two individual bronze medals, it wasn’t until the Sydney 2000 Olympics that Daniel took home gold in the 4 x 200m relay.
Out of the pool, Daniel has served as a Sporting ambassador for the United Nations and in several key leadership roles, including the Australian Swimming Team Mentor at the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2005 World Championships. Daniel has worked tirelessly for human rights, visiting refugee camps on the Thai/Cambodia border and championing athlete wellbeing.
Daniel Kowalski will share his experiences, what he has learned throughout his illustrious career and his techniques for maintaining his mental health and wellbeing. He is also happy to answer questions from the floor.
This event will be hosted both in person in Sydney and Online, with catering provided. Please let us know if you have any dietary or accessibility requirements if you are attending in person in Sydney.
