Reading the signs: Indigenous weather prediction of the Indigenous Sumi Nagas of India

Abstract
The Sumi Nagas of Northeast India are quintessentially hill people with kindred culture and linguistic heterogeneity. They share consecrated accord with nature, and reverence for their land is reflected in their knowledge of predicting weather through biotic (plants, birds, insects and other animals) and abiotic components (elements of air, water, fire and land).

This study complements Indigenous approaches to weather prediction to assist in the agricultural activities of the Sumi Nagas through an ethnographical inquiry in Zunheboto district of Nagaland, Northeast India. The study points to parallels and differences between Indigenous science and Western science paradigms of telling the weather.

The principal result - the Indigenous knowledge of predicting weather through components of the environment transcends Western science. The researcher does not refute Indigenous knowledge due to its lack of validation but supports the integrity and context of different knowledge systems.
