Improving academic relations between Bangladesh and Australia will be key to driving impactful research, says Charles Darwin University (CDU) Discipline Chair of Information Technology Professor Sami Azam.

Professor Azam was invited as a special guest to a grand convocation ceremony in Bangladesh last month as part of a growing partnership between Bangladesh’s University of Scholars (UoS) and CDU.

The academic procession was led by the Convocation President, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Honorable Advisor of the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, along with Vice-Chancellor Professor Enamul Basher, accompanied by other distinguished guests.

Like graduation ceremonies, a convocation ceremony is a celebratory event hosted by an educational institution to celebrate the academic achievements of its students.

Professor Azam said the partnership had culminated in the joint funding of three PhD students who will be working at CDU’s Energy and Resources Institute.

“This partnership has allowed us to tap into the immense potential of Bangladeshi students and engage in impactful research projects,” he said.

“The world is changing rapidly, and the only way to stay ahead is to remain curious, adaptable, and open to new ideas.

“It is important to embrace challenges as opportunities.”

In 2024, 16 per cent of CDU’s international students were from Bangladesh, one of the University’s top three countries of origin for international students.

Professor Basher said more than 2000 students graduated at the ceremony.

He said every student had shown remarkable dedication to their studies and congratulated them for completing their studies.
