Maiti Nepal History
Maiti Nepal was established through the collective efforts of teachers, journalists, and social workers who united to combat social injustices inflicted upon women. Founded by Anuradha Koirala in 1993, the organisation primarily focuses on preventing trafficking for forced prostitution, rescuing survivors and rehabilitating those who have been rescued. Maiti Nepal also actively works to provide justice for victimised women and children by conducting criminal investigations and pursing legal cases against offenders.
For over 30 years, Maiti Nepal, a not-for-profit organisation has been dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating survivors while advocating for the rights of women and children throughout Nepal. What began as a small shelter has grown into a comprehensive support network that offers education, vocational training, and economic empowerment helping survivors rebuild their lives and achieve lasting independence.
Maiti is a word from the Nepalese language, meaning a woman’s childhood home. Apart form being a beautiful word that evokes memories and a feeling of comfort, Maiti is a concept that many Nepali women carry close to their hearts.
Maiti Nepal Mission
To combat exploitation, violence, and trafficking of women and children through comprehensive and rehabilitation programs promoting education, empowerment, health, and social inclusion.
Maiti Nepal and CDU Agreement
Since 8 March 2023, CDU have partnered with Maiti Nepal to contribute to the futures of trafficking survivors and orphaned children connected with the organization. Inspired by Maiti Nepal’s mission, CDU is committed to supporting their work against human trafficking, child exploitation, and sexual assault while also providing educational and vocational training opportunities for orphaned and underprivileged youth.
As a significant step in this partnership, CDU has awarded two scholarships to students from Maiti Nepal, allowing them to pursue their Master’s studies here in Darwin. Together, CDU and Maiti Nepal are making strides to improve lives through the transformative power of education—whether through CDU's contribution towards vocational training and educational opportunities within Nepal or formal classroom learning abroad. By providing these education opportunities to hundreds of children, Maiti Nepal and CDU are taking profound steps to positively impact and making a difference in the lives of those impacted.
This agreement has enabled Maiti Nepal to expand educational and vocational training opportunities, providing vulnerable women and children with a platform for growth and self-sufficiency while fostering pathways for personal and economic empowerment. The in-country education and vocational training initiative has launched several impactful programs. For instance, a personality development course at Teresa Academy helped approximately 47 students in grades 7 and 8 in 2024, build their confidence and communication skills, benefiting them in both personal and professional settings.
The hands-on food and service training, conducted in collaboration with the International Hotel Training School, has equipped beneficiaries with skills in baking, hospitality, and barista training. Likewise, a beauty parlour training initiative in the Makwanpur District has opened doors for local women to enter the beauty industry, providing practical skills and expanding employment opportunities within their communities.
