Overview
Applications for 2024 will open from 1st December 2023.
This participatory digital badge offers you opportunities to explore the concepts of sovereignty and its place in relations between Indigenous peoples and contemporary Australian societies, including related concepts such as self-determination and autonomy, and examine how the concept has been understood historically and now.
This online course consists of 12 hours of self-study engagement with online learning materials, the contribution to discussion boards and the completion of quizzes over a 2 week period plus 2 x 1-hour weekly webinars.
This course will cover the following topics:
- Understanding sovereignty and related concepts including self-determination and autonomy.
- Exploring Indigenous sovereignty as both a concept and a social movement.
- Understanding the role of Indigenous sovereignty in the treaty processes in the Northern Territory and other Australian jurisdictions.
- Examining possibilities for the recognition of Indigenous sovereignty in settler colonial states.
This short course is suitable for government officials, legal professionals and people from community organisations. Upon the completion of your study, you will receive a digital badge by Charles Darwin University.

To be eligible for this course applicants are required to successfully complete ZSC011 Treaty Making 1 - Understanding Treaty.
