Three Charles Darwin University (CDU) staff members are helping to fight kids’ cancer this month by taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge.

Team CDU, made up of Zachary Watt, Sue Tucker and Deborah Blaser, have already clocked up 437km towards their goal of 500km for the Challenge, which encourages people across the nation to cycle and raise money for the Children’s Medical Research Institute.

Team CDU is currently ranked 1st among education institutions in Australia, with more than $4,500 raised thus far. Team CDU is also ranked 47th nationally.

“I’m riding in the Great Cycle Challenge for my cousin, Luke, who bravely battled leukemia as a child,” says Zachary.

“Luke’s resilience has always been an inspiration—he never complained, always smiled, and found joy despite the hardships he faced. He’s still battling cancer today but remains a devoted father, never giving up.”

“I also ride in memory of my dad, who lost his fight with cancer, and in support of my mother-in-law, who is currently facing this tough journey.”

“This is my sixth year taking part in the Challenge, and I’m honoured to be part of Team CDU alongside Sue Tucker (her ninth Challenge) and Deborah Blaser (her tenth Challenge).”

“These women inspire me every day, and together, we are riding to make a difference for kids battling cancer.”

“Please consider donating. If we can find a cure for kids, it brings hope for everyone affected by this disease.”

Since its inception in 2013, the Great Cycle Challenge has raised more than $42 million for childhood cancer research.

The Great Cycle Challenge runs for the entirety of October, but today, Wednesday the 23rd, marks the second double donation day of the month where all donations are matched up to $190,000.
