Brendan Reid

Charles Darwin University (CDU) Language and Learning Advisor (TAFE), Brendan Reid has won the 2023 Australian Training Award in Excellence in Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Practice.

Mr Reid has held the position since 2010 and is a dedicated and passionate individual who works with students and staff to help students overcome literacy and numeracy challenges, to support them to complete their qualifications.

CDU TAFE Deputy Chief Executive Robert Schwerdt described Mr Reid as a unique frontline trainer with extensive knowledge that spans many different areas of vocational education and training.

“Mr Reid has an ability to individualise learner-support activities, his multi-faceted skills are appreciated by students, parents, trainers and employers alike,” Mr Schwerdt said.

Mr Reid works closely with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who speak English as an additional language, he also carefully plans strategies to meet the requirements of students from a variety of backgrounds and communities.

There have been instances where Mr Reid enrols in certain courses to better understand the environment in line with students’ experiences, allowing him to enhance and improve his support.

“Mr Reid’s ability to explain concepts, and his unique approach to problem solving have helped many students over the years,” Mr Schwerdt said.

Mr Reid’s colleagues believe that his strengths in these areas have directly helped many apprentices get through difficult units and go on to successfully complete their qualifications.

Mr Reid attended the Australian Training Awards ceremony at Princes Wharf 1 in Hobart along with his mother and sister who travelled from WA to be present for the occasion. Mr Reid said it was a humbling experience for his work to be acknowledged by his peers.

“I really didn’t expect even to be nominated but to win was amazing, I am grateful to my team for their support and recognition,” he said.

“I want to thank all the people who took the time to nominate me as well as congratulated for receiving this award and appreciating my efforts over time.”
