CDU Education Lecturer receives Distinguished Service Award from key teachers association

August 2023 edition
Jenni Webber

A Charles Darwin University (CDU) Lecturer in Education has received a Distinguished Service Award at the national conference of the Australian Science Teachers’ Association in Adelaide.

Education Lecturer, Jenni Webber was presented with the award in recognition of service to the association over many years, including four years on the association executive as Treasurer.

Ms Webber has also been involved with the Northern Territory Science Teachers’ Association for more than 15 years and has been the NT representative on the Australian Science Teachers’ Association national board and council over this time.

Ms Webber said she is a strong advocate for the support that professional teaching associations provide to preservice, graduate and experienced teachers.

“I have really benefited from a range of professional learning opportunities and have been supported to present at a range of national and international conferences,” Ms Webber said.

“I have also helped to organise STEMBiosis, a collaborative professional learning conference here at CDU in 2022, which was really successful.”

“I am honoured to receive this award as it is a nice way to recognise the many years of service I have given.”

In addition to her lecturing, Ms Webber is also a long-term student of CDU beginning her studies here in 1989 when she enrolled part-time in a Batchelor of Science whilst she pursued her passion for working with wildlife.

She returned to study a Graduate Diploma in Education in 2001 and then completed a Master’s in education 2006 and is now commencing a PhD with a focus on measures for success in Indigenous Education.

Whilst Ms Webber has stepped down from her role with the science teachers’ association, she remains active as an executive member of the Professional Teachers Association of the Northern Territory (PTANT).

“I am looking forward to the upcoming PTANT Professional Learning Conference that is going to be held on August 26 at Dripstone Middle School,” Ms Webber said.

“I hope to see many of our local education students take advantage of the discounted rate to attend and experience the variety of professional learning and networking opportunities on offer.”
