Creativity carved into Open Day

Visitors can try their hand at ancient carving techniques in a special linocut workshop at Charles Darwin University’s Casuarina campus Open Day on August 24.

Participants can take home their self-made prints on Japanese rice paper, and get involved in other creative workshops at the one-day event.

Printmaking Lecturer Mats Unden said linocutting was enjoyable because the technique was easy to learn and the final product was appealing.

“Seeing the big printmaking machine and smelling the ink in the studio is rewarding in itself,” Mr Unden said.

Mr Unden said the workshop was similar to the introductory lecture for his beginners’ printmaking course at CDU. He said his students moved from hand-printing to using the printing press, creating etchings and applying other artistic methods.

“This is just an introduction to what you can do, but if you come as a student there’s so much more you can do,” he said.

Visitors can also get creative in the kitchen by learning how to whip up decadent desserts and become masters of mocktail mixology in various tasty workshops.

Other creative Open Day workshops include a Gaba Gaba traditional Indonesian dancing, hair and beauty demonstrations, and a chance to build your own dream home using Computer-Aided Drawing software.
