CDU moves up list of world’s top young unis

Charles Darwin University has scored a rankings hat-trick by featuring on a prestigious list of the world’s best universities that are less than 50 years old – for the third consecutive year.

The Times Higher Education “100 Under 50” list recognises the rising stars of higher education globally. CDU has risen from 77th place last year to 69th place this year.

CDU Vice-Chancellor Professor Simon Maddocks said the rankings affirmed the quality and excellence of research programs, in particular, at the university.

This is the third year Times Higher Education has released a list of the top 100 young universities and is the third time that CDU has claimed a place.

“The challenge for CDU as a small regional university is to maintain ranking in the fiercely competitive international system, so this result is a great endorsement for the university. With more than 23,000 students, CDU continues to grow and offers a fresh approach to training, education, research and knowledge application.”

A total of 14 Australian universities featured on the list this year, with CDU 9th among the Australian institutions.

Times Higher Education used 13 performance indicators to determine rankings in the “100 Under 50” list, including research volume, income and reputation; citations; the learning environment and international outlook.

The single largest indicator, citations, examines a university’s research influence by capturing the number of times its published works are cited by scholars around the world.

The data is drawn from some 12,000 academic journals indexed by Thomson Reuters’ Web of Science database, and adjusted to reflect variations in citation volume between different subject areas.
