Musicians bring Chinese tradition to NT

The serene tones of ancient China will filter through the wet season air as a troupe of traditional Chinese musicians performs a free concert in Darwin this Saturday.

The event, organised by the Northern Territory’s Confucius Institute at Charles Darwin University, will feature musicians from Anhui Normal University in China’s Anhui Province. During their visit, the musicians also will perform at schools in Darwin and Palmerston.

CDU Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor Faculty of Law, Education, Business and Arts Professor Martin Jarvis said the performances would introduce the Darwin public to interesting music and enhance an understanding of Chinese culture.

“I have heard the traditional Chinese musicians play at their university and it was wonderful,” Professor Jarvis said. “I am sure that everyone will enjoy listening to them.”

Traditional wind and string instruments of China, including the Chinese Dulcimer, pipa, erhu, Chinese flute, Chinese pipe and Sheng, will provide the soundscape of the concerts.

CDU is one of only 13 universities in Australia to have a Chinese Government-funded Confucius Institute, and is the direct result of the visit to Darwin by the President of China Xi Jingping in 2010. Anhui Normal University is CDU’s partner in the Confucius Institute.

The free concert will be held at 8pm on Saturday 26 October at the University Theatre, Building 3, Orange Precinct, CDU Casuarina campus.
