CDU student world champ skier

A Charles Darwin University student has won two gold medals at the International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation Under 21 World Waterski Championships in Orlando Florida.

Jacinta Carroll, who is in her 2nd year of a Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science, won gold in the jump event with a distance of 53.8m, and the gold medal overall.

“The overall event is all disciplines added together, so we competed in slalom tricks and jump,” Jacinta said. “It came down to the last ski of the tournament, but I was able to hold on to the gold medal in overall as well.”

The 21-year-old said that by winning gold at these championships she would go on to compete in the senior World Championships in Chile at the end of November. “It also boosts my status on the professional tour in an effort to attract sponsorship,” she said.

Jacinta, who is a cross institutional student enrolled at CDU and Victoria University, in Melbourne said the external course with CDU provided her with a way to study while travelling.

“I chose exercise science because I love learning about how the body moves and responds to certain stimuli and definitely believe the knowledge I am learning will assist me in my water-skiing career,” Jacinta said.

“I decided to study at CDU because the university provided me with the flexibility to do online courses, allowing me to follow my dreams at the same time as completing a degree.”

Originally from Geelong Victoria, Jacinta has water-skied since the age of 10. She represented Australia for the first time when she was 13 and joined the international Pro Tour at the age of 18. Jacinta has skied in Darwin on various occasions.
