CDU VC to take on new role

Charles Darwin University will embark immediately on recruiting a new Vice-Chancellor following the resignation of CDU’s second Vice-Chancellor, Professor Barney Glover, who will leave the university at the end of the year for a position in New South Wales.

CDU Council and the university community were informed this morning that Professor Glover would take up the position of Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Western Sydney (UWS) on January 1, 2014. He has been Vice-Chancellor of CDU for almost five years.

In her announcement to staff the Chancellor, Her Honour the Honourable Sally Thomas AM, said Professor Glover’s resignation was received “with regret”.

“Professor Glover’s leadership during the past five years has enriched tertiary education in the Northern Territory,” the Chancellor said.

“His leadership has been central to establishing the powerful and productive partnerships the university enjoys with government and industry. It also has been central to the university’s rising reputation both locally and internationally.

“On our campuses student numbers have increased, infrastructure and services have been expanded and improved substantially and significantly. Our university is now in a much stronger position from which to tackle any challenges that the future may present.”

The University of Western Sydney has six major campuses, operating revenues in excess of $650 million, and more than 40,000 students.

Professor Glover will succeed Professor Janice Reid AM, who is retiring after almost 16 years at the helm of one of Australia’s largest and fastest growing universities.

UWS Chancellor Professor Peter Shergold AC, said UWS should feel incredibly fortunate (in the appointment).

“UWS has for many years enjoyed the leadership of one of Australia’s great Vice-Chancellors, Janice Reid. Now Barney Glover, who shares our vision of UWS as a high-quality but open institution, will oversight our continuing growth and development,” Professor Shergold said.

“I have no doubt that Barney’s experience, energy and enthusiasm will be directed towards continuing to develop further the excellence of our teaching, building our research capacity and performance, and significantly enhancing the strength of our engagement with businesses and the communities of Greater Western Sydney.”
