Convert your thinking this World Tobacco Day
Quit smoking and get fit will be the key message at Charles Darwin University’s Casuarina campus as it launches a pilot Quit Smoking Get Fit Program as part of World Tobacco Day tomorrow (Friday, May 31).
In support of CDU’s Smoke-Free University Policy, the team at the The Gym@CDU is asking people to breathe a little easier by stamping out their cigarettes in favour of health and wellbeing.
Gym manager Calista Hudson said the 12-week program was designed in consultation with leading health experts, including Quit Victoria, and consisted of two, 45-minute sessions a week.
“Each session will focus on a different aspect of the positives of quitting smoking and getting fit, and provide tools to support participants through the process of improving their wellbeing,” Ms Hudson said. “These sessions will also connect participants with Quit Smoking resources and support.”
Ms Hudson said the program was open to CDU students, staff and the general public, and was for smokers and non-smokers providing a support role.
“Those interested are encouraged to come to our launch at CDU Breezeway (outside the library), Red Precinct, Casuarina campus, from 12noon to 2pm on Friday,” she said.
Try-A-Sport sporting groups will be exhibiting their talents, including the Sepak Takraw Association. There will also be music, a free BBQ and giveaways.
The 12-week Quit Smoking Get Fit Program is supported by a CDU Innovation Grant and the Northern Territory Government Department of Health. The program will start on June 18.
