Title

Professor Kostyantyn Mezentsev

Eight years of the war in Ukraine: Nostalgia for the Soviet Past, mass internal displacement and military urbicide

Abstract
The war has been ongoing in Ukraine for 8 years. What are the causes and consequences of Russia's military aggression in Ukraine from the human geography perspective? What is happening in Ukrainian cities during the armed conflict? Why and how do military attacks take place in Ukraine?

This seminar will discuss these issues along with Ukraine’s geopolitics, narratives from internally displaced persons (IDP), the weaponisation of media and impacts of ongoing military urbicide perpetrated by Russia in Ukraine.

Bio
Professor Mezentsev lives in Kyiv (Ukraine) and is Head of the Department of Economic and Social Geography at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, the largest national higher education institution in Ukraine. He has written and edited books on Ukranian demographics and international relations and is currently involved in the Ukrainian geopolitical fault-line cities: urban identities, geopolitics and urban policy, funded by the Research Council of Norway. Professor Mezentsev’s research examines the transformation of post-Soviet urban regions and cities, suburban spaces, migration, urban geopolitics, and IDP issues.
