International students get work-ready in the NT
International students at Charles Darwin University (CDU) and around Darwin are upskilling to become work-ready through a free two-day employability program.
Organised by CDU Global, Careers Centre and non-profit organisation Ignite Potential at CDU’s Casuarina Campus from December 7-8, the International Student Employability Program aims to prepare international students for the local Northern Territory workforce in their qualified field.
The series of masterclasses, interactive workshops and networking sessions feature training and insights shared by industry professionals, career consultants and international alumni.
Participating international students can learn about how to find relevant jobs in the Northern Territory, write resumes, prepare for interviews, gain networking tips and understand their work rights in Australia.
Manager of Careers Centre at CDU, Mita Das, said the program aimed to support and upskill international students when they enter the workforce.
“This program helps our international students decide what work is right for them, develops the skills needed to be employable, and supports them to apply and secure a job after graduating,” Ms Das said.
“Navigating the cultural differences in employer expectations, job search techniques and application processes are additional challenges that international students face so we’re pleased we can support them with skills to benefit their future careers.”
The final networking session of the two-day program will be the most valuable to international students wanting to gain industry connections and build their professional network locally.
At the networking session, they will hear from at least 10 CDU international students who have successfully secured jobs in the Territory.
CDU Global Director Joanne Chrystal said supporting international students getting employment in the local workforce could help address skill shortages.
“Working in collaboration with our experienced Careers Centre team and Study NT to deliver the Employability Program helps support our international students to succeed in their careers upon graduation,” Ms Chrystal said.
“CDU is the number-one Australian university for postgraduate full-time employment outcomes and our international graduates are essential to the skilled workforce in the NT.”
CDU Careers Centre offers free support to students at every stage of their career journey. More information about the services can be found at: www.cdu.edu.au/current-students/life-wellbeing/careers-employability
