Studying off-campus but still in the action: Meet Sushan
Sushan is part of the first generation of his family to receive a formal education and to go to university. His dreams of studying an MBA in Australia were almost lost when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. With CDU, Sushan has been able to study and build a community in Australia without leaving his home in Nepal.
Growing up in Nepal, Sushan had always wanted to start a social enterprise that made a difference to the people in his community.
Ever since I can remember, I have always imagined myself leading an enterprise and making positive impacts in society. I aspire to create employment opportunities for the youth in my community.
After completing his undergraduate degree, Sushan enrolled in a Master of Business Administration at CDU. CDU was right at the top of the list of great places to study.
"At the risk of sounding clichéd, the slogan ‘You Make CDU’ gives me the vibe of a welcoming community that treats all students equally, regardless of nationality," he says.
When he received a postcard from a friend who visited Darwin, he was sold.
"My obsession with naturally beautiful places is what led me to choose Darwin. My friend showed me the picturesque scenery and I couldn’t help myself but choose Darwin as my next study destination," he says.
Stuck at home but still able to study
As the COVID-19 pandemic grew in seriousness, Sushan’s opportunity to move to Darwin was stalled. Not wanting to wait, Sushan enrolled in his course with CDU online from his rural home in Nepal.
But being so far away hasn’t dampened Sushan’s ability to get involved in the student community.
Despite studying online, I have actively involved myself in and utilised many opportunities at CDU
"I hold the position of Online Officer and represent the online students in the CDU Student Council which is the peak student body at CDU," he says. "I was also one of the Senior Buddies in the CDU Online Buddy Program where I supported a few new students in starting their journey at CDU."
"I was elected as the president of the CDU Virtual Student Club, a student group organising various virtual events for students’ engagement and growth. All these events and initiatives have helped me gain confidence, some leadership and communication skills, and above all some great friends for life," he added.
Building a community…not just virtually
Sushan has found that getting involved in the community virtually has helped him with his studies during the pandemic. His advice? Get involved.
"My major advice would be to engage yourself in student clubs, participate in virtual events and interact with as many students as possible even though you’re virtually connected," he says. "For a willing one, CDU has tons of opportunities to utilise and learn from."
You will be able to make some great friends, create a good network and feel inspired to make the most of your journey at CDU.
As Sushan patiently waits for his move to Darwin, he’s looking towards the future.
"Five years from now, I see myself leading a recognised social enterprise providing many employment opportunities to the youth of Nepal."
