Katie's nursing degree is in the blood

Seeing her mother, grandma and aunt helping people within the local community inspired Darwin local Katie to take the leap and study a Bachelor of Nursing at Charles Darwin University.

Originally hailing from Darwin, Katie knows first-hand just how incredible the Territory can be. The distinct wet and dry seasons dramatically change the landscape each year, and Darwin's location is a key link between Australia and the South Asia Pacific.

By choosing to study nursing in the Territory, not only do I get to stay close to home, I feel like I am helping to make a difference to my local community.

 “Growing up in Darwin provided me with opportunities to explore the Northern Territory and gave me the chance to appreciate the amazing surroundings and landscapes on offer. I feel lucky to call this amazing place home,” she says. 

Unique range of environments

“I’m lucky that I’ve been able to experience my nursing degree in a range of environments, including in urban and rural settings."

I’ve had the unique opportunity to explore tropical health, which I may not have had the exposure to had I studied elsewhere.

“CDU has provided interactive learning with clinical placements, plus a range of textbook learning modules,” she says.

“I feel that CDU is the best option for me and many others. Whether you are an internationally based student, Darwin local, school leaver or mature aged student, I have found that CDU is accommodating to everyone.”

Helping you make decisions

“I found the process of deciding on a course daunting, but CDU made it easier for me to choose a career path. CDU offered a variety of support services to help with the decision making process from friendly student support, phone calls and student ambassadors."

"CDU has provided several great opportunities that have allowed me to develop my skill sets. They offer many opportunities to get involved within the community and to take leadership opportunities," she says.

During her nursing degree, Katie has made connections with like-minded students from across Australia and beyond, participated in exciting clinical simulations both on CDU campus as well as throughout the Darwin community. 

Real world experience

With the help of her studies in the Bachelor of Nursing, Katie recently secured a position at the Royal Darwin Hospital as a patient care assistant.

This has given her the opportunity to work alongside Darwin’s best medical professionals while learning valuable nursing skills, experiencing a range of clinical environments and overall helping her prepare to step into the role of a nurse.
