University to provide free careers, education counselling

Charles Darwin University will deliver a free 13-part webinar series to help people navigate changes in the Australian jobs market and education sector that have been redefined by COVID-19.

Manager of Student Recruitment and Events Marissa Briston said the live webinars would answer questions about upskilling, changing careers and studying online.

“The series will also examine application processes for the jobs market and education sector and explain how to negotiate the pathways between VET and Higher Education,” Ms Briston said.

“While the webinars will be presented and moderated by our CDU Student Recruitment and Events team, a number of specialist guests will be available to answer any questions people might have on a wide variety of topics.”

The May schedule includes:

• Evaluating your job prospects and future career options
• Careers of the future
• Staying productive and connected from home
• Considering a career in health? Check out these 5 occupations on the frontline
• Why now is the right time to upskill and build your CV.

The guest expert in the third webinar will be CDU’s Dean of Research and Research Training and psychologist, Associate Professor Simon Moss, who will discuss the psychology behind how people learn and what they can do to improve concentration at home.

“We cannot homogenise the way people react to their experiences in these challenging times, when there is a degree of isolation from what, until recently, was considered ‘normal’,” Dr Moss said.

“Different people react in different ways to working and studying remotely.”

Dr Moss also said he would discuss why reading very rapidly, listening to a song you have not heard since your teenage years, brushing your teeth while squatting, and deferring your worries until Sunday 4pm could help you during this time.
