Performance enhancing drugs will be on the agenda during a free workshop led by sport medicine experts as part of National Youth Week.

The “Talk Sport: Issues Impacting Performance” forum, coordinated by Sports Medicine Australia, will see Charles Darwin University exercise and sport science researcher Dr Jim Lee deliver a presentation on the topic of drugs in sport.

Dr Lee said it was important for young people to understand the effects performance-enhancing substances have on the body.

“Young people need to be educated about how drugs can contribute to performance enhancement, as well as the detrimental effects they can have on the body,” Dr Lee said.

“When many people think about performance-enhancing substances, they often think of stimulants, such as anabolic steroids.

“Suppressants have also proved to enhance the performance of athletes engaged in sports requiring a high degree of accuracy, such as archery or shooting.”

Other presentations will cover body image and mental health, women’s health, and nutrition, and will be delivered by a panel of sports psychologists, physiotherapists and dieticians.

The workshop will be open to people aged 12 to 25 with an interest in sport, exercise and health.

CDU offers a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science, which creates employment opportunities for graduates in fitness, sport and health industries.

The forum is free to the public and is supported by the Northern Territory Government. It will be held in Building 4, Green Precinct, CDU Casuarina campus. To register, visit W: www.sma.org.au/training-courses/
