Dow Australia has announced a new scholarship worth $10, 000 for Charles Darwin University Chemical Engineering students.

The “Chemical Engineering Prize” will be offered to third year Engineering students. The award will also support and fund a 12-week internship at one of Dow Australia’s local facilities.

CDU Vice-Chancellor Professor Simon Maddocks said he welcomed the announcement and further collaboration and investment by Dow Australia.

“The award will further support CDU’s Chemical Engineering program, which commenced in May last year, as the first fully accredited on-line Chemical Engineering undergraduate degree program in Australia and the third in the world,” Professor Maddocks said.

“Industry support such as this provides important assistance and incentive for students, but also reinforces the value that industry stakeholders place in developing graduate engagement.”

Dow Australia and CDU signed an agreement in March 2012 to deliver the first flexible online accredited chemical engineering program in Northern Australia. The three-year agreement supports the development of research, distance education and training at CDU’s North Australian Centre for Oil and Gas (NACOG).

As a chemical engineering graduate himself, Dow Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Andrew Liveris said the scholarship and work placement would help train the future NT based engineers.

“As the expansion of energy facilities becomes a reality over the next decade, and the potential of downstream advanced manufacturing begins to be realised, there will be considerable need to develop an appropriately skilled workforce and advanced engineering capability to support this and allied industry sectors,” Mr Liveris said.

“CDU’s foresight through the expansion of NACOG will help Australia to maximise the competitive advantages of the country’s natural resources through creative solutions that use energy as a driver, not a drain, on long-term economic growth and sustainable prosperity and wealth.”
