A new graduate centre for education that will build the research profile of education locally and internationally has opened at Charles Darwin University.

The International Centre for Education (IGCE) is located in the School of Education building on CDU’s Casuarina campus and will bring together local and international educational professionals.

CDU School of Education head Professor Peter Kell said the centre would focus on building the research profile of education in the Northern Territory and with partners in the Asia Pacific region including Indonesia and East Timor.

“The IGCE will host the education health research nexus, a joint initiative with the Menzies School of Health Research,” Professor Kell said. “This research initiative investigates the influence and links between health and education with research projects on student resilience, and the influence of drug and alcohol on student learning also underway.”

He said the Centre for School Leadership would also be part of the IGCE. “This centre is a joint initiative of CDU and also the NT Department of Education to boost leadership skills. Three new programs for future school leaders, school principals and executive development will start in 2014 and these will all have pathways into higher degrees.”

Professor Kell said the flagship program of the centre was the new Master of Education offered online.

“The program explores the dynamic nature of education in the context of globalisation,” he said. “The opportunities for global learning mean that the boundaries for education and training are limitless.

“Learning is now global and involves new ways of engaging with learners across international boundaries. New forms of learning include digital learning using the new technologies of the internet.”

He said the online degree explored areas such as digital learning, language and literacy, education and wellbeing, international development and leadership, and had options for research thesis, overseas internships and projects.
