Law students from Charles Darwin University will soon have the opportunity to travel to Indonesia as part of a national program that encourages Australians to study abroad.

CDU is one of 24 Australian universities to gain mobility grants under the Australian Government's $100 million New Colombo Plan, which will involve more than 300 undergraduate students studying in a pilot program at universities in Japan, Indonesia, Singapore and Hong Kong.

The plan has been designed to further strengthen Australia’s ability to engage with the Indo-Pacific region.

Interim Vice-Chancellor Professor Sharon Bell said funding secured by the university would see CDU law students, from throughout Australia, set off to broaden their knowledge at Universitas Gadja Mada (UGM) and Universitas Indonesia (UI).

“CDU has developed active long-term strategic relationships with UGM and UI, which will be further strengthened through this student mobility program,” Professor Bell said.

“The two-week study programs will be a great benefit to students and potentially life-changing. It will expose them to new ideas, perspectives and friendships, and lay the foundation for continuing relationships and a two-way flow of students and staff.”

Travel, accommodation, living, visa, medical, insurance and communication costs, as well as program fees, will be covered by the funding.

The UGM program consists of a two-week study program in the Law Faculty where students will study and research intellectual property law in an international context, with particular reference to Indonesia’s compliance with international conventions relating to intellectual property protection.

The UI program consists of a two-week study program in the university’s Law Faculty, where students will study and research international organised crime.

The students are expected to travel to Indonesia in April this year.

CDU is also applying for further funding under the plan for undergraduate students to have the opportunity to apply for New Colombo Plan scholarships for longer-term study of up to a year.
