Tiwi Island’s First Nations students take part in drone workshop as part of expo
Charles Darwin University (CDU) academic Dr Farha Sattar introduced First Nations students on the Tiwi Islands to the world of drones as part of the Tiwi Futures Expo that took place on the Island.
The event, organised in collaboration with the Remote School Attendance Strategy and Tiwi Training and Employment, provided these young minds with hands-on experience in the world of drone technology.
Students from five Wurrumiyanga community schools eagerly participated, gaining invaluable knowledge about drone flying and adhering to safety regulations set by the Civil Aviation and Safety Authority (CASA).
Dr Sattar said students relished the opportunity to get hands-on experience with the drones.
“These expos are really vital in helping inspire the next generation of drone operators,” Dr Satter said.
“Throughout the expo, I was able to share my expertise in drone operations, as well as providing information around essential drone safety rules.
“The students loved the opportunity of getting hands-on experience in flying drones and this was a big highlight of the day. It is really important to encourage our youth who may be interested in technology and aviation to give it a go and help equip them with the skills they need so that they can progress their careers."
The Tiwi Futures Expo exposes students on the Tiwi Islands to careers they may not have imagined and shows them what is possible once they finish school.
