CDU student dreams up design while volunteering at local radio station
A Charles Darwin University (CDU) student with a background in graphic design is using her skills to give back to the community, volunteering behind-the-scenes at a local and well-loved radio station.
Yuanmo (Amy) Hu is currently pursuing a Master of Arts, but an opportunity at Territory FM became an avenue for her to marry passion and profession.
She is designing the station’s Volunteer Handbook, creating a visual narrative that will inspire and guide potential volunteers – setting the stage for the future.
"Beyond the confines of classrooms and design labs, I've always believed in the power of giving back," Ms Hu said.
"At Territory FM, I see an opportunity to create, inspire, and engage with a community that has given me so much. I'm not just designing pages, I'm crafting stories. And in doing so, I'm learning, growing, and weaving my own narrative into the intricate fabric of Darwin and Territory FM.”
As a graphic design aficionado, Ms Hu aspires to harness the power of visuals to tell stories, inspire actions, and build communities. The Volunteer Handbook at Territory FM is just a step in this expansive journey.
"With every design, every project, I aim to capture the universality of emotions and experiences. Territory FM is more than just a station to me—it's a canvas, waiting to be painted with diverse stories."
But this isn’t her first foray in giving back to the community, with a portfolio of volunteer experiences for Darwin Symphony Orchestra.
Drawn by the allure of Australia's unique landscapes, Ms Hu found more than just academic fulfillment in Darwin – the blend of natural beauty, multicultural flair, and a plethora of opportunities echoed the diverse ambiance of her hometown in China.
"Being an international student has given me a unique lens to view the world," she said.
"Darwin's compactness, rich cultural festivals, and sense of community resonate deeply with my own background. It's a place where nature meets culture, and where every street has a story to tell."
Ms Hu’s endeavours have not gone unnoticed at CDU, and she was recently honoured with the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award as further testament to her dedication.
