Two of Charles Darwin University’s (CDU) researchers in engineering have been recognised for their achievements in the industry at the recent Engineers Australia excellence awards.

Professor Krishnan Kannoorpatti and Dr Hooman Mehdizadeh-Rad received the Engineers Australia’s Professional Engineer of the Year 2023 and Emerging Professional Engineer of the year 2023 award for the NT division respectively.

The Engineers Australia excellence awards recognises the achievements of engineering professionals across Australia and highlights cutting-edge engineering projects that are driving Australia forward.

As an expert in materials, corrosion and manufacturing engineering, Professor Kannoorpatti has delivered over 70 research papers with many of his concepts being applied in the aviation and shipbuilding industries.

Professor Kannoorpatti said he is passionate about helping the next generation of advanced manufacturing engineers.

“Receiving this recognition means a lot to me as an academic and it is a validation of the many years of hard work that I have done with the industry,” Professor Kannoorpatti said.

“I hope this has also turned the attention of the industry towards the work CDU does in manufacturing, materials and corrosion engineering fields.

“It feels nice to be recognised by my peers and I hope it encourages more students to get involved with engineering particularly here at CDU where we have several highly recognised academics and achievers."

Dr Mehdizadeh-Rad is an emerging engineer with a passion for improving local outcomes for societal problems.

His research is focused on the practical application of solar cell technology and zero energy buildings.

Dr Mehdizadeh-Rad said the recognition reinforces his belief in the importance of passion, knowledge and dedication to serving the community.

“The award is a profound recognition of my profession, and it validates the years of hard work and commitment,” Dr Mehdizadeh-Rad said.

“Moreover, this award is likely to enhance the reputation of CDU and raise its profile. As a CDU alumnus, I feel greatly empowered by this achievement.”

Local winners of the Engineers Australia Excellence Awards will go on to represent their division at the national awards in Melbourne on November 29, 2023.
