International students honoured for community contributions
Two outstanding Charles Darwin University (CDU) students have been recognised for their commitment to fellow students and local communities at the recent Study NT International Student Awards.
The annual awards, held in March, are an initiative of the Northern Territory Government and showcase students who have made a difference by supporting their peers, devoting time and effort to improving community connections, and achieving academic success throughout their studies.
Master of Information Technology student Thi Tho (Rosie) Nguyen was awarded the 2022 Study NT International Student of the Year award for her efforts as a CDU student ambassador, participating in many student groups and events at the University.
“I am so grateful for all the people who have supported and helped me during my studies at CDU,” Ms Nguyen said.
“I feel encouraged to continue to work hard, contributing to the local community and helping fellow peers, here in the Northern Territory where my second home is.”
Master of Teaching student Yuqing (Crystal) Zhao was also acknowledged as the Study NT International Student Volunteer of the Year for her dedication to Kindness Shake, an initiative that provides international students with financial, social and educational support.
“Receiving the Study NT award for international student volunteer has given me a proud sense of achievement,” Ms Zhao said.
“The recognition and support I have received from students and the local community has helped me grow as an individual and have such a rewarding experience.”
Ms Zhao also has some helpful advice for international students starting their studies at CDU.
“I would recommend getting involved in social clubs and societies where you can meet like-minded people and feel more connected to the student community,” she said.
“Explore outdoors, take part in events and activities, make new friends, and embrace the challenges and opportunities that come your way.”
Study NT promotes international education and training, working with NT businesses and the local community to support international students to accomplish academic success, and aspire towards new pathways for their future.
Award recipients were announced at an annual Welcome Reception hosted by the NT Minister for International Education, the Hon Ngaree Ah Kit MLA at Parliament House.
