Donating blood A-positive experience

Charles Darwin University staff and students are rolling up their sleeves for those in need in the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood Tertiary Blood Challenge.

The Tertiary Blood Challenge is a nationwide initiative where universities compete to donate the most blood or plasma. According to Lifeblood, Australia needs more than 1.7 million donations each year to meet demand.

Upwards of 50,000 tertiary staff and students are expected to participate in the challenge, which began in March and ends on May 31.

CDU has thus far made 32 donations and saved 96 lives.

CDU Student Systems Business Analyst Lilin Chum, who is a regular plasma donator, was thrilled her next donation could contribute to the challenge and said there were many reasons why people should donate.

“There are so many reasons why people should donate,” she said.

“It doesn’t cost a cent, just your time. You save lives, you get snacks and drinks after you donate just to name a few.

“It’s an easy process to donate blood or plasma and it is explained to you by the nurses especially if it’s your first time or fiftieth time. And if you have a zillion questions, there are so many resources available on the website or you can contact the call centre and speak to someone if you’re worried or a little anxious.”

Ms Chum encourages those who can donate to show others how easy it is by posting to social media about their experiences and raising awareness through posters and sharing posts by Lifeblood.

“If you have ever seen a patient, especially a loved one, receiving plasma or blood in hospital or care it really hits home that you quite literally are, saving lives,” she said.
