CRSW0150 - Timeline Templates

Table of Contents

Overview

This page is used to create or modify Timeline Templates on which new Timelines (CRSW2650) are based.

Timeline Templates created on this page constitute the selector values for the Timeline Template field on the New Timeline page (CRSW2650).

A Timeline Template provides a predefined grid layout for a Timeline (CRSW2650). This includes:

A Timeline Template defines the columns that will apply to a Timeline grid.

Multiple Timeline Templates can be created for a specific Course Structure to cater for the different Course Types and/or Attendance Types, if required.

It is expected that Timeline Templates will be used in both the Course Structure and Planning subsystem and the Proposals subsystem.

This page is accessed from the main menu.

Field Descriptions

The following table describes each field on the New Timeline Template page, including applicable Table values. An asterisk (*) indicates that the field is mandatory.

The base tables for Timeline Template pages are:

Field: Description:
*Template Code

Enter a unique code for the Template in this field.

The maximum number of characters that you can enter in this field is 10.

On the Template (List) page, the Template Code links to the Template (Edit) page.

Table Value:
COURSE_TIMELINE_TEMPLATE.TEMPLATE_CD

*Template Name

Enter a unique institution-defined name for the Timeline Template in this field.

The maximum number of characters that you can enter in this field is 60.

The Template Name entered in this field will be included in the selector values for the Timeline Template field on the New Timeline page (CRSW2650).

Table Value:
COURSE_TIMELINE_TEMPLATE.TIMELINE_NAME

Closed check box

Select this check box to close the Template.

Closed Templates are not available when creating a new Timeline (CRSW2650).

Closed Templates cannot be used when creating a new Timeline.

If a Template is closed after being used to create a Timeline, it will continue to exist but cannot be used any longer to create new Timelines.

Table Value:
COURSE_TIMELINE_TEMPLATE.CLOSED_IND

Include Precedent

Select this check box to enable a Precedent (PRDW0400) to be associated to a Timeline via the Timelines (CRSW2650) page, if required.
For more information, see the Timelines (CRSW2650) page.

Note: When adding a Precedent to a Timeline (CRSW2650), the course code (and version number, if provided) of the Internal Course linked to the Precedent must match the course code (and version number) of the Course Structure (CRSW2600) to which the Timeline belongs.
However, for Timelines in Proposals (PAAW1100), it is not possible to identify the context course code (and version number) of the Timeline (this occurs after the Proposal is transferred into the CRS subsystem), therefore, all Precedents are available for selection in the Timeline (CRSW2650).

Table value:
COURSE_TIMELINE_TEMPLATE.INC_PRECEDENT_IND

Layout Configuration block

The fields in this block are used to configure the layout for Timelines based on the Template.

Course Type

This is the institution-defined Course Type, set up in the Maintain Course Type (CRSF1110) form, that is used to indicate the type of course (for example, Undergraduate Bachelor's Pass, Diploma, Graduate Certificate, Masters by Research).

Select a value from the List of Values for this field. Values are sourced from the Maintain Course Type (CRSF1110) form.

Table Value:
COURSE_TIMELINE_TEMPLATE.COURSE_TYPE

Attendance Type

This is the institution-defined Attendance Type as set up in the Maintain Attendance Types (CRSF1170) form. Typical Attendance Types are 'full-time' and 'part-time'.

Select a value from the drop-down selector on this field. Values are sourced from the CRSF1170 form.

Table Value:
COURSE_TIMELINE_TEMPLATE.ATTENDANCE_TYPE

*Expected Timeline Total Value

The expected total value (in credit points, contact hours or units) that will apply to all Timelines based on the Template. This value may be a decimal number.

This value is displayed as the 'Expected' value at the bottom of the grid in the Timeline page (CRSW2650). However, the value may be changed in the Timeline page (CRSW2650) via the Expected Total and Minimums' pop-up page, if required.

It is expected that the 'Timeline Total' value in the Timeline (CRSW2650) page will equal to or greater than the Expected value (i.e. the 'Expected Timeline Total Value').

It is possible that this value will be less than the minimum number of credit points, contact hours or units required to complete the course, as specified in CRSF1210, as multiple Timelines can be created for the different components of the course.

Select one of the following values from the drop-down selector on this field, then enter a value in the adjacent data-entry field:

  • Credit Points
  • Contact Hours
  • Units

Table Value:
COURSE_TIMELINE_TEMPLATE.GRID_VALUE
COURSE_TIMELINE_TEMPLATE.GRID_VALUE_TYPE

*Primary Column Attribute

This field is used in conjunction with the following Primary Column Attribute Labels field (below). The value you select for this field determines the values for the Primary Column Attribute Labels field (below) which are displayed as the first row of column labels in the Timeline grid.

Select one of the following values from the drop-down selector:

  • Course Stage - Institution-defined course stages or milestones that typically correspond to the length in years of a course. For example, a three year Bachelor degree would typically comprise of three stages: Year-01, Year-02, Year-03. Course Stages are defined in the Maintain Course Stages (CRSF12D0) form.
  • Teaching Calendar - This is the institution's Teaching period (i.e. a Calendar Type (CALF0220) of TEACHING), for example, semesters, trimesters or terms. A unique Calendar Type, assigned a Calendar Category of TEACHING, is required for each Teaching period commencing within an Academic period (for example, Semester 1 (SEM-1) and Semester 2 (SEM-2). For more information, see the Maintain Calendar Types (CALF0220) form.
  • Unit Level - The institution-defined code used to specify the year level in which units are attempted for particular Course Types. A Unit Level is generally the year level of the course to which the unit belongs, for example: '1' may refer to a unit in the first year of a degree course, '5' may refer to a unit in year 1 of a Masters degree. For more information, see the Maintain Unit Levels (CRSF2140) form.
  • Other - Selecting this value enables you to define your own column labels in the Primary Column Attribute Labels field, below.

For example, if you select 'Course Stage' as the Primary Column Attribute and and 'Teaching Calendar' as the Secondary Column Attribute, then you could define the labels for these columns as: Year 1, Year 2, Year 3 [Course Stage], and Semester 1, Semester 2 [Teaching Calendar].

The values for this field are hard-coded and cannot be changed.

Table Value:
COURSE_TIMELINE_TEMPLATE.PRIMARY_COL_TYPE

*Primary Column Attribute Labels

This field is used in conjunction with the Primary Column Attribute field (above). It allows you to define the labels for the first row of column headers in the Timeline grid.

The type of field displayed here and the available List of Values (LOVs) depends on the value you selected for the Primary Column Attribute field (above), i.e. if you selected:

  • Course Stage - Institution-defined Course Stages are available for selection, as defined in the the Maintain Course Stages (CRSF12D0) form; for example, Year-01, Year-02, Year-03.
  • Teaching Calendar - Institution-defined Teaching periods are available for selection, as defined in the Maintain Calendar Types (CALF0220) form; for example, SEM-1, SEM-2, SEM-3.
  • Unit Level - Institution-defined Unit Levels are available for selection, as defined in the Maintain Unit Levels (CRSF2140) form; for example, '1' (Level 1), '2' (Level 2), '3' (Level 3).
  • Other - You must manually enter your own label name. (Maximum number of characters is 20.)

Select a value from the list of values, then enter a label name in the adjacent Column Label field.

To add multiple labels, click the plus (+) icon.

The order in which you enter the column labels is the order in which they will appear in the Timeline (CRSW2650).

Table Value:
COURSE_TMLN_TMPLT_CELL_ATTR.ATTRIBUTE_STRING_VALUE

*Secondary Column Attribute

This field is used in conjunction with the Secondary Column Attribute Labels field (below). The value you select for this field determines the values for the Secondary Column Attribute Labels field (below) which are displayed as the second row of column labels in the Timeline grid (under the Primary Column Attribute Labels).

Select one of the following values from the drop-down selector:

Note: The value 'Other' is not available for this field.

The value you enter in this field must not be the same as the value selected for the Primary Column Attribute field, above.

The values for this field are hard-coded and cannot be changed.

Table Value:
COURSE_TIMELINE_TEMPLATE.SECONDARY_COL_TYPE

*Secondary Column Attribute Labels

This field is used in conjunction with the Secondary Column Attribute field (above). It allows you to define the labels for the second row of column headers in the Timeline grid.

The type of field displayed here and the available LOVs depends on the value you selected for the Secondary Column Attribute field (above), i.e. if you selected:

Select a value from the list of values, then enter a label name in the adjacent Column Label field.

To add multiple labels, click the plus (+) icon. For example: Semester 1, Semester 2, etc.

The order in which you enter the column labels is the order in which they will appear in the Timeline (CRSW2650).

You can have any number of secondary columns labels, as required. For example, it is possible to have just one Primary Attribute Label and multiple Secondary Attribute Labels, such as: Year 1 [Primary Column Label] and Semester 1, Semester 2, Semester 3 [Secondary Column Labels].

Timeline Template (Edit) Page

Once a Timeline Template has been created you can change any field, except the Template Code field.

For field information, see Field Descriptions, above.

When a Timeline (CRSW2650) is created using a Timeline Template, there is no continued connection to the Template once the new Timeline is saved. This enables you to modify the Timeline Template, if required, without it affecting any existing Timelines that are based on the Template.

A modified Template is only applicable to future Timelines (CRSW2650) that are based on the Template.

If you delete or mark a Template as closed it will no longer appear in the LOVs on the Timeline Template field on the New Timeline page (CRSW2650).
