CRSW1050 - Course Plan Structure Qualifiers

Table of Contents

Overview

This page is used to create and maintain insitution-defined Qualifiers that are used in Course Plan Structure Versions (CPSVs) or in Components of CPSVs.

A Qualifier is part of the syntax (for example, DO, AND, OPTION, AT LEAST, ALL, EQUALTO, etc) that is used to:

Currently, a Qualifier is saved as a STRUCTURE or COMPONENT Type, depending on the System Qualifier to which it is mapped:

This page is a Reference Data page that is used to set up data required in Course Plan Structure pages. For example, Qualifiers set up here comprise the List of Values for the Qualifier field on the New Component pop-up page (CRSW2020).

To use this page, it is expected that you will be a Course Administrator who is authorised to set up Reference data for Course Plan Structures.

Navigation

Navigation from the Course Plan Structure Qualifiers (CRSW1050) page to the New Course Plan Structure Qualifier page is shown below:

CRSW1050 Nav

The list of records on the CRSW1050 page is an 'editable list'. For more information, see the Working with Lists Help page.

To Create a New Qualifier

To create a new Qualifier, click on the New icon on the CRSW1050 page. The Create New Qualifier pop-up page is displayed on which you can enter the new Qualifier's details. For field information, see Field Descriptions, below.

Note:
You can create either a COMPONENT Qualifier type that would apply to a Component (CRSW2020), or a STRUCTURE Qualifier type that would apply to a CPSV (CRSW2040). See 'System Qualifier', below, for more information.

The 'System Default' checkbox is only displayed if you select a DO, AND or OPTION System Qualifier.

To Edit a Qualifier

Records listed on the CRSW1050 page can be edited directly in the table.

1. To modify a Qualifier, select the required Qualifer from the list of records then click on the Edit Records icon.

2. Make the required changes to the selected record. For field information, see Field Descriptions, below.

Note: A Qualifier cannot be deleted once it is associated to a CPSV. However, if the status of the associated CPSV is INACTIVE, you can 'close' the Qualifier.

3. Click on the Save icon to save your changes.

Field Descriptions

The following table describes each field on the CRSW1050 page, including applicable Table values.

An asterisk (*) indicates the field is mandatory when creating a new Qualifier.

Note: Field labels are institution-configurable.

Field: Description:
*Qualifier Institution-defined name for the Qualifier. Once saved, it cannot be changed.

Qualifiers created here (and their Description) constitute the List of Values for the Qualifier field on the Create Component pop-up page (CRSW2020).

COURSE_PLAN_QUALIFIER.QUALIFIER_CD
*Description Description of the Qualifier.

COURSE_PLAN_QUALIFIER.DESCRIPTION
*System Qualifier The System Qualifier to which the Qualifier is mapped. For example, System Qualifiers include: DO, AND, OPTION, ALL, AT LEAST, BALANCE, BETWEEN, EQUAL TO, UPTO.

A Qualifier mapped to a System Qualifier of type STRUCTURE determines the level at which a Qualifier can be applied in a Course Plan Structure (see CRSW2040). For example, STRUCTURE Qualifiers mapped to the System Qualifier 'DO' will be applied to the very first Component in the CPSV level (see CRSW2040). All other Components in the CPSV automatically default to the Qualifier mapped to a System Default of 'AND' unless manually overridden. In this way a hierarchical order of Components is set up.

A Qualifier mapped to a System Qualifier of type COMPONENT applies to UNITS, TEXT or COMPOSITE Components (see CRSW2020) and determines the terms in which the requirements for the Component are measured (for example, the number of units, credit points or hours required to complete the Component).

Multiple 'open' Qualifiers can be mapped to a System Qualifier.

A 'System Default' (see below) must be specified for one and only one of each of the following System Qualifiers: AND, DO, and OPTION.

COURSE_PLAN_QUALIFIER.S_QUALIFIER_CD
Type The type of Qualifier. This is a display-only field and is only shown on the CRSW1050 List page.

This field is automatically populated once you save the new Qualifier. The type of Qualifier depends on the System Qualifier you selected when creating the Qualifier (see above).

There are two Qualifier Types:

  • STRUCTURE - Applies to Components of a CPSV (see CRSW2040).
  • COMPONENT - Applies to Components of Category Type UNITS, COMPOSITE or TEXT. (See CRSW2020.)

S_COURSE_PLAN_QUALIFIER.QUALIFIER_TYPE
System Default Indicates whether the Qualifier is the System Default. This checkbox only applies to Qualifiers of type STRUCTURE that are mapped to a System Qualifier AND, DO and OPTION.

You must specify a System Default for one, and only one, of each System Qualifier: DO, AND and OPTION.

COURSE_PLAN_QUALIFIER.SYSTEM_DFLT_IND
Closed Select this checkbox to close the Qualifier (for example, if the Qualifier is associated with an INACTIVE CPSV).

You cannot link a Closed Qualifier to a Component (CRSW2020).

If required, a Closed Qualifier can be re-opened.

List of System Qualifiers of Type STRUCTURE

A STRUCTURE Qualifier is applied to the top level of a Course Plan Structure, and links together all parent Components of a CPSV (for example, Core and Elective Components). See CRSW2040. STRUCTURE Qualifiers are also the 'System Default' Qualifiers.

The following table lists all 'STRUCTURE' System Qualifiers:

System Qualifier Explanation
DO Used to indicate that the Component is mandatory in a Course Plan and restricted use to the first Component in the Course Plan Structure Level.

There can only ever be one 'DO' System Qualifier.

Where a first level Component is prefixed by the DO Qualifier, this first level Component therefore must be selected as part of the Course Plan by a prospective student in the Course Plan Enquiry system.
AND Used to indicate that the Component is mandatory in a Course Plan.

Where a first level Component is prefixed by the AND Qualifier, this first level Component therefore must be selected as part of a Course Plan by a prospective student in the Course Plan Enquiry system.
OPTION Used to indicate the alternative path in a Course Plan.

Used in conjunction with other alternate Components within the Course Plan Structure.

At least two Course Plan Structure Components should exist with this Qualifier when this Qualifier is used.

Where first level Components are prefixed by the OPTION Qualifier, one of these Components must be selected as part of the Course Plan in the Course Plan Enquiry system.

List of System Qualifiers of Type COMPONENT

A COMPONENT Qualifier is applied to Components of Category Type UNITS, TEXT and COMPOSITE. (For more information, see CRSW2020.)

The following table lists all 'COMPONENT' System Qualifiers:

System Qualifier Explanation
ALL If the System Component Category is UNITS, all Units must be selected.

If the System Component Category is TEXT, the Value will equal the default number of Units that this Component will be equal to and therefore used within Course Plan calculations.

If the System Component Category is COMPOSITE, the immediate sub-components (children) will need to be selected to complete the Course Plan during enquiry.

For example:
Sys Component Category: UNITS
Qualifier: ALL
Value: Not applicable
All Units will be preselected and counted towards the completion of a Course Plan during enquiry. The CPSV Component must contain at least one Unit.
ATLEAST If the System Component Category is UNITS, for the value entered, the selected Units must be equal to or greater than that value.

If the System Component Category is TEXT, the value will equal the default Units that this Component will be equal to and therefore used within Course Plan calculations.

If the System Component Category is COMPOSITE, for the value entered, the selected Units from the child Components must be equal to or greater than that value.

For example:
Sys Component Category: UNITS
Qualifier: ATLEAST
Value: 5
Then 5 or more Units within the Component must be selected during enquiry. The CPSV Component must contain at least 5 Units.
ATLEAST-CMPNT Only valid for Components mapped to the System Component Category of COMPOSITE.

For the value entered, the selected child Components must be equal to or greater than that value.

For example:
Sys Component Category: COMPOSITE
Qualifier: ATLEAST-CMPNT
Value: 2
Then 2 or more child Components of the Composite can be selected during enquiry. The CPSV Component must contain at least 2 Child Components.
ATLEAST-CP If the System Component Category is UNITS, for the value entered, the selected Units’ Enrolled Credit Points must be equal to or greater than that value.

If the System Component Category is TEXT, the value will equal the default Credit Points that this Component will be equal to and therefore used within Course Plan calculations.

If the System Component Category is COMPOSITE, for the value entered, the selected Enrolled Credit Points from the child Components must be equal to or greater than that value.

For example:
Sys Component Category: UNITS
Qualifier: ATLEAST-CP
Value: 24
Then the sum of the Enrolled Credit Points of the selected Units within the Component must be equal to or greater than 24 Credit Points during enquiry. The CPSV Component must contain Units that sum at least 24 Credit Points.
ATLEAST-HOURS If the System Component Category is UNITS, for the value entered, the selected Units’ Total Hours must be equal to or greater than that value.

If the System Component Category is TEXT, the value will equal the default Hours that this Component will be equal to and therefore used within Course Plan calculations.

If the System Component Category is COMPOSITE, for the value entered, the sum of the selected Unit’s Total Hours from the child Components must be equal to or greater than that value.

For example:
Sys Component Category: UNITS
Qualifier: ATLEAST-HOURS
Value: 120
Then the sum of the Total Hours of the selected Units within the Component must be equal to or greater than 120 Hours, during enquiry. The CPSV Component must contain Units that sum at least 120 Hours.
BALANCE A value is not valid for this Qualifier Type as it is calculated during the Enquiry based on other selections in the CPSV.

If the System Component Category is TEXT, then no value will be displayed. The value for calculation purposes, will automatically default to:

First instance of a defined Units From & To values going back through the hierarchy, less units selected in other Components within the Composite Group(s).

If the System Component Category is UNITS, then:

BALANCE value = the minimum number of units to fulfil the range requirements defined in the Component’s Composite Group. Units From & To values will be displayed in enquiry and the value will be dynamic as units are selected within the Composite Group Components. The value for calculation purposes, will be:

First instance of defined Units From & To values going back through the hierarchy, less units selected in all other Components within the Composite Group/s.

If no values are defined within the hierarchy, then the BALANCE value will be calculated using the default Unit values defined at the CPSV Entity. If no Units From and To values are defined within the CPSV Entity then BALANCE should not be used.

If the System Component Category is COMPOSITE, then:

BALANCE values = the minimum number of units to fulfil the range requirements defined in the Component’s Composite Group Parent, after all other Components within the group have been selected and accounted for. If Units From & To values are not defined at the immediate superior Composite Group, then the Balance will be calculated using the 1st occurrence stepping back up through the hierarchy, level Units From & To values.

If no values are defined within the hierarchy then the Balance will be calculated using the default Unit value defined at the CPSV Entity. If no Units From and To value is defined within the CPSV then BALANCE should not be used.

For example:
Sys Component Category: UNITS
Qualifier: BALANCE
System Component Category: COMPOSITE (Parent in hierarchy)
Range:
Units From: 8
Units To: 10
Other Components in Composite Group sum to the Unit value of:
Units: 5
Then balance Units within the Component = minimum of 3 (8 minus 5) that can be selected during enquiry. The CPSV Component must contain at least 3 Units.
BALANCE-CP A value is not valid for this Qualifier Type as it is calculated during the Enquiry based on other selections in the CPSV.

If the System Component Category is TEXT, then no value will be displayed. The value for calculation purposes, will automatically default to:

First instance of a defined Credit Points From & To values going back through the hierarchy, less Credit Points selected in other Components within the Composite Group(s).

If the System Component Category is UNITS, then:

BALANCE-CP value = the minimum number of Credit Points to fulfil the range requirements defined in the Component's Composite Group. Credit Points From & To values will be displayed in enquiry and the value will be dynamic as units are selected within the Composite Group Components. The value for calculation purposes, will be:

First instance of defined Credit Points From & To values going back through the hierarchy, less the sum of units selected Credit Points in all other Components within the Composite Group/s.

If no values are defined within the hierarchy, then the BALANCE-CP value will be calculated using the default Credit Points values defined at the CPSV Entity.

If the System Component Category is COMPOSITE, then:

BALANCE-CP values = the minimum number of Credit Points to fulfil the range requirements defined in the Component's Composite Group Parent, after all other Components within the group have been selected and accounted for. If Credit Points From & To values are not defined at the immediate superior Composite Group, then the Balance will be calculated using the 1st occurrence stepping back up through the hierarchy, level Credit Points From & To values.

If no values are defined within the hierarchy then the Balance will be calculated using the default Credit Point values defined at the CPSV Entity.

For example:
Sys Component Category: UNITS
Qualifier: BALANCE-CP
Sys Component Category: COMPOSITE (Parent in hierarchy)
Range:
Credit Points From: 8
Credit Points To: 10
Other Components in Composite Group sum to the Credit Point value of:
Credit Points: 5
Then balance CPs within the Component = minimum of 3 (8 minus 5) that can be selected during enquiry. The CPSV Component must contain Units that total at least 3 Credit Points.
BALANCE-CP-LVL If the System Component Category is COMPOSITE, BALANCE-CP-LVL is an invalid Qualifier.

If the System Component Category is TEXT, then no value will be displayed. The value for calculation purposes, will automatically default to:

First instance of defined Credit Points From & To at Unit Level values going back through the hierarchy, less Credit Points selected in other Components within the Composite Group(s).

If the System Component Category is UNITS, then:

BALANCE-CP-LVL value = the minimum number of Credit Points to fulfil the range requirements defined in the Component's Composite Group. Credit Points From & To values at Unit Level will be displayed in enquiry and the value will be dynamic as units are selected within the Composite Group Components. The value for calculation purposes, will be:

First instance of defined Credit Points From & To at Unit Level values going back through the hierarchy, less units selected in all other Components within the Composite Group/s.

If no values are defined within the hierarchy, then the BALANCE-CP-LVL value will be calculated using the default Credit Points values defined at the CPSV entity. If no Credit Points From and To at Unit Level values are defined within the CPSV Entity then BALANCE-CP-LVL should not be used.

For example:
Sys Component Category: UNITS
Qualifier: BALANCE-CP-LVL
Sys Component Category: COMPOSITE (Parent in hierarchy)
Range:
Credit Points From: 8 at Unit Level 3
Credit Points To: 10 at Unit Level 3
Other Components in Composite Group sum to the Credit Point value:
5 at Unit Level 3
Then balance Credit Points within the Component = minimum of 3 (8 minus 5) Credit Points at Unit Level 3 that can be selected during enquiry. The CPSV Component must contain Units that sum up to at least 3 Credit Points at Unit Level 3.
BALANCE-HOURS A value is not valid for this Qualifier Type as it is calculated during the Enquiry based on other selections in the CPSV.

First instance of defined Hours From & To values going back through the hierarchy, less the sum of units selected Hours in all other Components within the Composite Group(s).

If no values are defined within the hierarchy, then the BALANCE-HOURS value will be calculated using the default Hours values defined at the CPSV entity.

If the System Component Category is COMPOSITE, then:

BALANCE-HOURS values = the minimum number of Hours to fulfil the range requirements defined in the Component's Composite Group Parent, after all other Components within the group have been selected and accounted for. If Hours From & To values are not defined at the immediate superior Composite Group, then the Balance will be calculated using the first occurrence stepping back up through the hierarchy, level Hours From & To values.

If no values are defined within the hierarchy then the Balance will be calculated using the default Hours values defined at the CPSV Entity.

For example:
Sys Component Category: UNITS
Qualifier: BALANCE-HOURS
Sys Component Category: COMPOSITE (Parent in hierarchy)
Range:
CPs From: 80
CPs To: 100
Other Components in Composite Group sum to the Credit Point value of:

The value for calculation purposes, will be:

First instance of defined Hours From & To at Unit Level values going back through the hierarchy, less units selected in all other Components within the Composite Group/s.

If no values are defined within the hierarchy, then the BALANCE-HOURS-LVL value will be calculated using the default Hours values defined at the CPSV Entity. If no Hours From & To at Unit Level values are defined within the CPSV Entity then BALANCE-HOURS-LVL should not be used.

For example:
Sys Component Category: UNITS
Qualifier: BALANCE-HOURS-LVL
Sys Component Category: COMPOSITE (Parent in hierarchy)
Range:
Hours From: 50 at Unit Level 3
Hours To: 80 at Unit Level 3
Other Components in Composite Group sum to the Hours value:
Hours: 40 at Unit Level 3
Then balance Hours within the Component = minimum of 10 (50 minus 40) Hours at Unit Level 3 that can be selected during enquiry. The CPSV Component must contain Units that sum up to at least 10 Hours at Unit Level 3.
BALANCE-LVL If the System Component Category is equal to COMPOSITE, BALANCE is an invalid Qualifier.

If the System Component Category is UNITS, then BALANCE-LVL value = the minimum number of units to fulfil the range requirements defined in the Component’s Composite Group. Units From & To values at Unit Level will be displayed in enquiry and the value will be dynamic as units are selected within the Composite Group Components. The value for calculation purposes, will be:

First instance of defined Units From & To at Unit Level values going back through the hierarchy, less units selected in all other Components within the Composite Group/s.

If no values are defined within the hierarchy, then the BALANCE-LVL value will be calculated using the default Unit values defined at the CPSV Entity. If no Units From and To at Unit Level values are defined within the CPSV Entity then BALANCE should not be used.
