This form is used to record one or more fields of study against a unit set, in order to meet the requirements for reporting DEST element 332, Specialisation Code. Fields of Study codes are maintained using form CRSF1140.

This function also allows institutions that use generic courses and rely on unit sets to stream students or define specialisations within those courses to specify fields of study for those streams or specialisations.

For example, a Bachelor of Commerce might have various possible majors (and hence unit sets), including Business Administration, Economics and Marketing. The Business Administration stream may have an Accounting and Banking and Finance emphasis. These two areas can be recorded as fields of study against the Business Administration unit set.

This form is entered in the context of a particular unit set, from the Maintain Unit Sets form (CRSF4200).

Enter, or select from the list of values the appropriate field(s) of study .

If only one field of study is being created for the unit set, the Major Field check box will have been selected by default. 100 should be entered in the Percentage field.

If more than one field of study has been created, select the Major Field checkbox for the field of study considered to be the major field of study and adjust the percentage values in the Percentage field of all records so that their total is exactly 100.

Save.

Notes/Rules:

  • A unit set may have more than one field of study.
  • Each field of study must be assigned a percentage, representing the proportional weighting of the field of study in relation to other fields of study associated with the unit set. The total of the percentages for all fields of study of a unit set must be 100.
  • One, and only one, field of study must be identified as the major field of study.
  • Fields of study are created and maintained using the Maintain Fields of Study form.
  • Field(s) of study cannot be altered once the Unit Set has been made INACTIVE.
  • CLOSED fields of study cannot be added to unit sets.
  • Only the Major Field and Percentage fields are able to be modified. To change a field of study it is necessary to delete incorrect records and/or create new records.
  • An ACTIVE unit set must contain at least one field of study. If all fields of study are deleted using this process, at least one new course of study must be added before saving.

Changes within this form will have the following notable effects:

  • Fields of study map to Government fields of study which are used for DEST statistical reporting. Changes to fields of study may affect the DEST statistics.
