Field of Study 

Explanation

This form is used to record and maintain the set of institution-defined Fields of Study covering the courses offered by the institution. These may be mapped to the Government Fields of Education (defined in STAF112J) that are reported to DEST. Institution-defined Fields of Study may be historically mapped to the Govt Field of Study codes (defined in STAF1123) that were previously reported to DEST. To allow for a more detailed classification of Fields of study at the institution level, more than one institution-defined Field of Study code can be mapped to the same Government Field of Education code.

 

 

To create a new field of study or research code using the Maintain Fields of Study form:
  1. Enter Insert Mode.
  2. Enter the desired name (or code) of the field of study or research code in the Field of Study field of a blank record.
  3. Enter a meaningful description for the field of study/research code in the Description field.
  4. Select the appropriate Govt Field of Study/Research Code from the list of values (or key a valid value).
  5. Save. 

Rules:

  • New institution-defined Field of Study codes should be mapped to Govt Field of Education codes.
  • A field of study/research code cannot be mapped to a CLOSED Government field of study/research code. 
  • Government Field of Eductaion value must be 4 digits in length.

To delete a field of study or research code using the Maintain Fields of Study form:
  1. Find the record to be deleted.
  2. Locate the cursor in the record to be deleted. 
  3. Delete record.
  4. Save. 

Rules: 

  • If a field of study or research code has been used in the definition of a course, it cannot be deleted. It can be closed, preventing any further use, by selecting the Closed check box.
  • A CLOSED field of study/research code cannot be re-opened if the Government code to which it is mapped is CLOSED. 

To modify a field of study or research code using the Maintain Fields of Study form:
  1. Find the record to be modified.
  2. Modify the record as required.
  3. Save. 

Rules: 

  • If a field of study/research code has been used in the definition of a course, only the description can be modified. This is not recommended unless the change in description is minor and does not affect the meaning of the description. A new field of study/research code should normally be created.
  • A field of study/research code can be closed, preventing any further use, by selecting the Closed check box.
