Unit fee triggers enable the fee assessment routine (FINJ3500, FINJ3001) to match unit related fees to corresponding student unit attempts, as discussed in the Specialist Overview. If a unit trigger recorded against a fee liability matches a student unit attempt, the student is eligible for assessment for the fee.

Unit triggers can be assigned to fees with either a UNIT or a COMPOSITE trigger category. With the UNIT category, the trigger is used for fees relating very specifically to individual units, or a small number of units. An example might be a laboratory charge for a particular unit or units. When used with a COMPOSITE category, the form allows for units to be included as part of a trigger group (established in FINF2224).

A different form, FINF2225, allows triggers to be recorded for unit sets.

A unit trigger can be set up to take effect only if a match is made on one or more attributes. These are: a particular teaching calendar; a specified instance of the selected teaching calendar; the location where the unit is studied; the class in which the unit is undertaken.

The form is accessed from Maintain Fee Categories (FINF2800), using the Fee Liabilities button then selecting the Unit Triggers button.

Deletion. Logical deletion, described below, allows for a trigger to be 'removed' while still enabling transaction reversals to be made for those transactions that have already been created as a result of the trigger.

The Fee Category Fee Liability block shows the fee liability (fee within a category in a fee period) and charge method for which triggers are recorded in the following block.

Use this form to record, maintain or view the units, and the combinations of criteria for units, which determine the scope of the fee liability selected.

The unit code entered here as a required field is matched by the fee assessment routine to the unit attempts of eligible students.

Optional fields. The recording of values in any of the fields indicated below is optional, allowing for many permutations in the application of fees to units. For any combination of attributes selected, a match is required in the student's unit attempt for the trigger to take effect.

  • The version number, if selected, effectively sets the trigger at unit version level.
  • Calendar type, if selected, effectively sets the trigger at unit offering level.
  • Alternate Code can only be selected if a calendar type has been selected. It effectively sets the trigger at unit offering pattern level.
  • Location code and/or unit class effectively sets the trigger at unit offering option level.

For fee liabilities with a COMPOSITE trigger category, a unit recorded here can be included in a trigger group by selecting a trigger group number. If desired, the same unit can be recorded more than once if included in a different trigger group.

To logically delete triggers, select and delete the record as normal. No Save is necessary - confirmation is requested before an automatic logical deletion is performed. A deletion date is supplied by the system.

Rules and Notes:

  • Only units with a system unit status of ACTIVE or PLANNED can be entered here.
  • The trigger group list of values presents all groups recorded for the liability except those with a deletion date.
  • Open calendars with a system calendar category of TEACHING can be selected in the Calendar Type field.
  • Only locations with a system location type of CAMPUS are shown in the LOV.
  • Setting the 'Include deleted triggers' indicator allows the display of all triggers, including those that have been logically deleted, when the form is queried. It has NO effect on functionality in the fee assessment routine.
  • The Creation Date of a record is automatically supplied by the system.
