Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Code

Explanation

This form is used to record and maintain the institution defined set of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) codes. These are comparable to government Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander codes (DEST element 316) specified in the Data Dictionary of the DEST manual, but provide for greater flexibility with the ability to subdivide government codes and to use more meaningful codes. Each institution defined code must be mapped to a government Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander code. ATSI codes are used in the Maintain Person Statistical Details form (ENRF3060) and the Callista Connect Person Statistics application.

Example

Element 316 of the Higher Education Student Data Collection is a single numeric code (2, 3, 4 or 9) which indicates whether or not the student identifies him or herself as being of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. This form permits an institution to define a set of equivalent codes which may have a more obvious meaning, as shown below.
