Unit Mode

Explanation
This form is used to record and maintain the set of institution defined unit modes. A unit mode describes the way in which students may study the unit. Unit modes are assigned to unit classes to describe the way the class will be presented to students. Every institution defined unit mode must be mapped to a System Unit Mode which is recognised by the System for other functionality.

Unit mode provides for any flexibility required by an institution by permitting classification at a more detailed level and the use of unit mode names specific to the institution.

Example
There are currently only three system unit modes. They are on campus, off campus and composite. Any institution defined unit modes can be mapped to these or the set of unit modes could be identical to the set of system unit modes.

To create a new unit mode using the Maintain Unit Modes form:
  1. Enter Insert Mode.
  2. Enter the code or name of the unit mode in the Unit Mode field of a blank record.
  3. Enter a meaningful description for the unit mode in the Description field.
  4. Select the appropriate system unit mode from the list of values (or key a valid value) in the System Unit Mode field.
  5. Save.
To delete a unit mode using the Maintain Unit Modes form:
  1. Find the record to be deleted.
  2. Locate the cursor in the record to be deleted.
  3. Delete record.
  4. Save.
Rules:
  • If a unit mode has been assigned to a unit class, it cannot be deleted. It can be closed, preventing any further use, by selecting the Closed check box.
  • A unit mode cannot be closed if a unit class which is mapped to it is open.
To modify a unit mode using the Maintain Unit Modes form:
  1. Find the record to be modified.
  2. Modify the record as required.
  3. Save.
Rules:
  • If a unit mode has been assigned to a unit class, only the description can be modified. This is not recommended unless the change in description is minor and does not affect the meaning of the unit mode. A new unit mode should normally be created.
  • A unit mode can be closed, preventing any further use, by selecting the Closed check box.
