- increase opportunities for patients and families to participate in
service planning and management
- increase patient control over interactions: e.g.
the topics, the language used, the participants, the time and the place
- identify and respond to the priorities of patients and their families
- provide access to meaningful information in the patient's preferred
language utilising effective communication strategies

for staff and Indigenous patients/ interpreters / healthworkers to work
together to develop a shared understanding about their perspectives
and practices
